The Harley Street Clinic (THSC) and The Portland Hospital (TPH) offer the full breadth of adult and maternity services, delivered by leading, cardiac, general, gynecological and oncological surgeons, consultant obstetricians and an expert team of nurses, midwives and allied healthcare professionals. Internationally renowned for clinical excellence, the complex medical care, clinical oncology and major surgery we provide is supported by our Adult Intensive Care Unit (The Harley Street Clinic) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (The Portland Hospital).

The Harley Street Clinic specialises in cardiac, oncology and neurosciences and undertakes some of the most complex surgery within the private sector. The Portland Hospital specialises in maternity services, gynecological surgery and a wide range of general and specialist care to children, including a paediatric urgent care.

Job Description

The Quality Matron will ensure effective departmental processes are in place to enhance the patient experience of care delivery and support the multidisciplinary teams in providing high quality nursing care. The role of the Quality Matron will be to provide visible leadership, guidance and support to ward teams in the implementation of clinical standards and quality initiatives in line with the hospital’s risk management framework.

The Quality Matron will provide assurance around compliance with regulatory and internal standards of care and be accountable for quality aspects of the CQC domains: responsive, well led, caring and safe.

They will maintain a high profile within both hospitals and be available to patients and their/carers thereby promoting confidence in our services, working in a collaborative approach with the MDT in the interests of developing and promoting high quality of patient care. The post holder will also act as liaison and resource between the Learning Academy and clinical services.

The Quality Matron will act as resuscitation lead for THSC and TPH. As the single point of contact for paediatric and adult resuscitation, the Quality Matron will coordinate all resuscitation activities across the two hospitals. Maintain good links with all local/departmental resuscitation leads.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To work with the Deputy CNO, Head of Adult Clinical Services, Women’s & Neonatal Services Manager, nursing teams and other members of the multi professional team to ensure that quality management is embedded into the Adults Services culture across all departments
  • To promote clinical governance and service improvements following the analysis of complaints, adverse events and other drivers for change
  • Encourage the involvement of all staff in quality issues through open and direct communication with the teams
  • To work as part of the multidisciplinary team fostering a positive approach to quality improvement and supporting staff in the development of these skills
  • To ensure that Safeguarding is integrated into practice, and ensure that Adult protection issues are managed effectively supporting clinical teams as required.
  • To provide leadership and support to the nursing teams and to act as a role model
  • Participate as a member of the senior nursing team across both facilities.
  • To ensure that the NMC Code is adhered to by the nursing teams.
  • Promote a culture of positivity, striving for excellence and collaborative team working.
  • To support the nursing teams in delivery of the quality improvement agenda and take a leading role in planning for future services.
  • Provide line management to specified members of the team.
  • Participate in and lead on the co-ordination of an in service training program which encompasses, resuscitation, manual handling, infection control etc.
  • To participate in and lead on relevant corporately led programs of work
  • Collate and analyse data as required to prepare and present reports to relevant forums.
  • To facilitate team awareness and monitor compliance pertaining to, regulations and standards appropriate for their department, particularly in regard to CQC and CHKS.
  • Ensure departmental teams are informed, trained and developed to provide positive patient experience.
  • Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement through the use of patient satisfaction feedback and reflection on practice ensuring that patient feedback is integrated into service design and developments.
  • To participate in and lead service improvement projects or development programs that contribute to the modernisation of patient service.
  • To work in collaboration with the Governance Team in relation to regulatory or accreditation inspections in respect of evidence required.
  • To ensure Datix investigations are completed within 2 weeks of the reported date, ensuring lessons learnt and action taken are identified and implemented to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. 
  • Assist with completion of and undertake Root Cause Analysis (RCA’s) regarding serious incidents when necessary and support others to develop the skills required to complete RCA’s.
  • To oversee and lead on the risk register ensuring it is current and reflective of key risks within the nursing areas and monitored regularly.
  • Address poor practice and put in place procedures/development programs to change practice going forward.
  • Ensure staff adhere to the Data Protection Act and comply with information governance ensuring patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Work with ward teams to ensure the completion of the clinical nursing audits and ensuring action plans in place with appropriate time frames.
  • To ensure that for each service improvement identified, there is an action plan, with appropriate time frames, which facilitates a change in practice to reduce the risk and or frequency of incidence.
  • Liaise with Health and Safety lead and ensure there is a robust process in place for monitoring the Health and Safety agenda.

Skills & Experience

  • Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies, at a minimum educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc Nursing degree
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification. ENB 998 or equivalent essential
  • Leadership or management training
  • Level 3 safeguarding trained
  • ALS qualified (desirable)
  • IT literate including emails and Office packages
  • Evidence of continued professional development

  • Excellent understanding of the principles of clinical governance including risk management
  • Excellent specialty knowledge relevant to Adult Nursing including professional and current issues
  • Ability to complete robust incident investigations and root cause analysis with effective action planning
  • Strong commitment to improving quality and ability to produce effective ways of working to improve service delivery and patient outcomes
  • Excellent understanding of managing the clinical audit process
  • Well - developed leadership, negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to empower, motivate and enthuse individuals / teams
  • Excellent organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail and ability to prioritise and delegate workload effectively
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Ability to present and write concise accurate reports
  • Be confident and able to deal with and resolve complex situations including conflict resolution
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
