Our Paediatric wards hold 56 inpatient beds + 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced medical and surgical care, including a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which reflects the acuity and complex nature of the children who are admitted to our hospital. The Portland Hospital has a large number of international Paediatric patients, often funded by relevant embassies.

The Portland Hospital is the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK. The hospital provides for both consultant-led and midwifery-led deliveries, having an 18 bedded ward to facilitate this. Alongside this there is a 12 bedded Gynecology and Women’s Health in-patient ward. The Portland Hospital also has a large outpatient department for all areas of its clinical expertise, to facilitate continuous care or simpler procedures.

We currently have a vacancy on our in-patient surgical ward for a Sister/Charge Nurse

Job Description

The Surgical Sister will act as an expert practitioner and role model, assisting colleagues to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of patients in both a High Dependency and ward setting within the Hospital.

To deliver planned nursing care in agreement with the patient or the main carer as appropriate, demonstrate effective evaluation of nursing interventions and initiate newly planned care accordingly, ensuring patient advocacy is maintained at all times.
 

Salary between £39,174 and £50,000 (Dependent on experience) plus Enhancements and HCA Benefits

Working hours 37.5 per week (rota to include nights, weekends and public holidays)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate clinical credibility and advanced nursing practice when assessing the patient.
  • Continuously deliver plans of care, whilst taking into consideration consultant preferences, monitoring nursing outcomes and evaluating and adapting plans of care and reporting to the ward team/ medical staff / Matron as appropriate.
  • Communicate with consultants and organise the transfer/discharge of patients from the High Dependency Unit to the ward.
  • As shift leader guide junior staff and take overall responsibility for the assessment of patients and delivery of care plans by utilization of advanced skills.
  • Assist and support staff to attain their core clinical competencies and be part of the assessment process.
  • As team leader/ supervisor able to co-ordinate a group of nurse’s assessment over a period of time.
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of a deteriorating patient and initiate early interventions in a calm and co-ordinated manner. Take the lead in emergency situations and carry out evaluation of care post emergency care situations.
  • Advise other clinical areas/ departments with regards the needs of the critically ill patient/ acting as resource for ward areas.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of women’s health surgery including gynaecology and breast surgery.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring nursing procedures reflect evidence-based practice by continuously participating in the review of policies/ procedures/ protocols and guidelines.
  • To provide advice and information to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to women without supervision, in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate patient centred care.  
  • To be responsible for the day to day shift co-ordination of the ward, providing nursing leadership, guidance, expert clinical advice and managerial skills.
  • To oversee care provided by registered and non-registered staff within their sphere of responsibility.
  • To review ‘work force planning’ and secure adequate cover from temporary staffing if required to ensure staffing levels are maintained to set staffing criteria.
  • Deal with complex situations and take appropriate action in emergency or unforeseen situations.
  • To promote a learning environment for post registration nurses by assessing training needs and working closely with the Matron to ensure these are met.
  • Maintain patient safety by complying with HCA Medication Policy, NMC and National Guidelines for medicines, blood and blood product administration; participate in clinical audit and ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrate and practice principles of infection control including universal precautions and initiate appropriate actions to isolate patients when necessary; participate in audit and ensure compliance. Educate more junior members of the team on any relevant aspects.
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of staff and departmental resources.
  • Ensures adequate and appropriate equipment is available to meet the patient and MDT requirements
  • Actively participates with the Head of Department in establishing/ setting unit departmental budgets and annual capital equipment budget
  • Reports defective equipment and ensures appropriate action is taken to ensure a safe environment
  • Assists the Women’s Services Matron in ensuring a comprehensive learning environment.
  • To be a resource for students and other junior colleagues, and assist in their development.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Registered General Nurse with NMC pin
  • High dependency qualification desirable
  • Teaching and mentorship qualification
  • First line management course
  • ILS or ALS qualified
  • Certificate, Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • Private patient experience (desirable)
  • Evidence of Sister or  Senior Nurse level experience within a High Dependency or Surgical setting
  • Surgical knowledge and senior experience caring for pre and post-operative patients
  • A willingness to participate in the care of patients undergoing Termination of Pregnancy
